About Our Methods
Every child learns at their own pace, and no two students progress in exactly the same way. When a student is pushed to move faster than they are ready for, gaps can form in their understanding. On the other hand, if a student is held back when they could move ahead more quickly, they may become bored and lose interest in reading. In either situation, the key is allowing each child to progress at the pace that helps them truly master the skills.
With this in mind, we created a 3-level tutoring program designed around our students. This approach lets us meet every child exactly where they are, so they can move forward at the speed that is right for them instead of feeling rushed or held back.
If a student needs extra time to master the material, they are welcome to stay in the program for as long as necessary. This flexibility is especially valuable for children with learning disabilities or challenges with focus. As long as students and their parents treat our teachers with respect, they can continue until they are confident and ready to move on.
Tutoring is for students ages 6 - 18*

LEVEL 1
Introduction to Phonics
At Level 1, we focus on studying and practicing phonics and teaching students how to sound out words accurately. Many children skip words, guess based on pictures, or substitute similar-looking words, which can create gaps in their reading foundation.
Unlike a typical class that covers only basic long and short vowel sounds and labels most other words as sight words, rule breakers, or exceptions to be memorized, our approach recognizes that letters represent far more sounds than students are usually taught. True sight words (words that cannot be sounded out at all) are very rare.
Our tutoring program is designed to help students quickly break these bad habits and build a complete, reliable understanding of phonics. Most students spend just a few weeks at this level before moving smoothly into Level 2, where they apply these phonics skills to improve comprehension and fluent reading.
If a student already has solid phonics knowledge or masters the material quickly, they can advance to Level 2 sooner — sometimes in only a few tutoring sessions.
LEVEL 2
Advance Phonics with the Declaration of Independence
At this level, we build on what students learned in Level 1 and use the Declaration of Independence to improve their reading abilities.
Due to the high reading level of the Declaration, once students can read it, they will have the skills necessary to read almost anything else, including novels, textbooks, and historical documents. Even young children can achieve this. By breaking the text down and explaining its meaning, children can understand almost anything, including the Declaration. We’ve had many young students fall in love with the Declaration once they learn how to understand it.
Students also learn how to look up words and grasp historical context. For older students, this includes talking about the grievances against the King and why they are included in the Declaration of Independence. Younger children will be taught to ask a grown-up for help when looking up words or ask questions about history, until they are old enough to safely research on their own. This level is where they gain confidence and begin becoming independent readers.
LEVEL 3
Advanced Applied Phonics
Students will apply their skills and take turns reading from classic literature, such as The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jane Eyre, and other books that focus on historical periods or important topics like economics and how the world works. This is where they learn to read smoothly, analyze the topics, engage with the material, and become independent readers.
